Janet Faye Winter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Winter of near Lincolnville, was the first baby born in 1956 at St. Luke Hospital. She was born at 9:13 a.m. Jan. 1 and weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces. The Winters have four other daughters, Darlene, Mary Ann, Pauline, and Roberta.

Even though Marion had to be content with sixth place in the invitational Jayhawk League basketball tournament held over the holiday in Wamego, Larry Schlehuber, Marion senior, was the outstanding player of the tournament by all odds. When the smoke cleared, Larry was in firm possession of all six individual tournament records.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Hannaford entertained a number of guests New Year's Eve to watch the old year out at the home of his mother, Norma Hannaford. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. David Carlson of Alta Vista, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bill Gound and Carolyn Merrill of Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Exline and John Newcomer of Manhattan, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Parker of Peabody, Lt. and Mrs. Leslie Powell of Waco, Texas, Barbara Rempel and Bob Kline of Emporia, Don Ecker of San Diego, and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Reinke of Manhattan.
