Alfred J. Sparks, congenial proprietor of the Elgin Hotel in Marion for the past 35 years, died Sept. 13 at St. Luke Hospital following a short illness.

Many of Marion County's creeks and streams are drying up as a result of the extended drought — over a month without any appreciable rainfall.

Today, Thursday, marks the 50th anniversary celebration of the Marion National Bank. The bank is one of Marion's older business establishments. It has been under the same management the past 28 years with Earl Kreuter being the present president and Mrs. Kreuter serving as vice president.

Mrs. Albert Stroda wasn't present to claim $45 Monday night at the Kaw Theatre. Next week's Cash Night jackpot will be worth $60.

Two Marion County residents were the mighty lucky winners in a nationwide sweepstakes conducted recently by the International Harvester Company. The two winners, both of whom chose 15-ft. upright food freezers, are Louis Moravec of north of Marion and Mrs. Ed Lietz of Lincolnville.

Births announced in this issue included the following: twins, a boy and a girl, born Sept. 12 to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hiebert of Kinsley; a son, Jeffry Lee, born Sept. 13 to Mr. and Mrs. Estil Longhofer; a daughter, Beverly Ann, born Sept. 8, to Mr. and Mrs. David Bowers; and a daughter, Debra Ann, born Sept. 10 to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Adams.

Three new members, Mrs. Jack Beaston, Mrs. Alex Case Jr. and Miss Joann Kirk, were welcomed Monday evening at the first meeting of the year for 20th Century Club. A watermelon feed was enjoyed at Waterworks park.
