Two men are near death following a shooting fray Wednesday night. Marvin L. Evans, 31, owner of the Peabody Hotel was shot through the chest by C.B. Pace, 57, in the beer parlor just off the corridor in the hotel. Pace then went to a nearby drug store, bought a tube of phosphorescent rat poison, broke the tube in half and started eating it right there. Both men are in Axtell Christian Hospital, Newton. Evans is in critical condition and Pace's condition is said to be "dangerous."

S.W. Gound has purchased the interest of his partner, Ira Newcomer, in the Newcomer-Gound Motor Company, Ford dealers. The firm will now be know at Gound Motor Company.

August Junior Hett is the new commander of the Ecker-Fulkerson-Slifer Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He, along with his fellow officers, was elected to the post March 11. Others elected were: Ed Sandwell, trustee; Al Bernhardt, senior vice commander; Bob Hoover, junior vice commander; and Hal Young, post quartermaster.

The most severe weather by long odds ever experienced in this area in March, according to the weather bureau, came this week. An old fashioned blizzard swept across Kansas Wednesday, which blocked roads through the whole area. The thermometer plunged to six below zero Wednesday night and the forecast is for continued cold.

Mrs. Edson Childs entertained in honor of her son, Mark's, eighth birthday Saturday afternoon. Games were played and refreshment of birthday cake and homemade ice cream were served to the following guests: Neil Hoopes, Leroy Winters, Bill Remmers, Eugene Waner, Jimmy Christensen, Mickey Seaton, Junior Post, Junior Bledsoe, Norman Moon, Tommy Shirley, C.E. and Keith Ford, Michael Childs, Gregory Henry, Paul Ford, Paul Schmersey, Laurence Priddle and Cynthia Ann Weis of Newton.
