Joe Swan, who for the past 41 years has served on Marion's volunteer fire department, moves into the newly created office of Honorary Fire Chief on July 1 and Fred Knackstedt takes over the office of fire chief. These moves were announced this week by the city commission.

Numerous complaints have been received this week by Marion city officials of the discharge of fireworks within the city. Official have again stressed that the city ordinances provide regulations in regard to the discharge of fireworks and appeal to the public to help in their observance.

A fondness for canaries when just a youth has grown into a $1,500 hobby for T.W. Spachek, cashier of the Pilsen State Bank at Lincolnville. The basement of his bank is the headquarters for approximately 425 canaries including rollers, choppers, Hartz Mountains, and warblers.

Mrs. James Martin, Wichita, the former Helen Good, was hostess at a pottery shower last Wednesday evening to compliment Miss Kathleen Thies, Wichita, who will become the bride of Donald Kirchner at the Christian Church, Sunday, June 17.

Forrest Kelsey and Don Van Buren have enlisted in the Army and left Monday. They expect to be stationed at Junction City where they will be members of the Army band, playing bass horns.

Marion County friends of Randolph Carpenter, present United States District Attorney, and former Congressman from the 4th District, were pleased to learn of his filing for the office of governor of Kansas on the Democratic ticket. Carpenter's only Democratic opponent is Ewell Stewart, Topeka. Republican candidates include Frank Carlson, incumbent, W.P. Lambertson, and James McClain.
