JUNE 8, 1944

Thousands of allied soldiers swarmed the beaches early in the morning of June 6th, the long-awaited D-Day. The one thought uppermost in the minds of everyone this week is for the speedy and successful conclusion of the invasion in France and the end of the war in Europe. The hopes and prayers of the world go with these boys who are giving everything in this greatest of all wars.

Marvin Hett S1/c talked to members of the Boy Scout troop at their regular meeting Monday night telling of his experiences in the Navy. S/Sgt. Bill Wright also was to have talked, but did not appear because of a previous engagement.

Misses Marie and Lydia Meier entertained with a theatre party Monday night at the Hillsboro picture show in honor of Pfc. Rowena Loney. Those attending were Pfc. Loney, Miss Geraldine Krch of Hillsboro, Ella Meier, Herbert Meier and the hostesses.

Sub Deb members and several guests enjoyed a slumber party Friday night at the country club in honor of Anna Lou Hoch, who is moving to Gresham, Oregon. The club presented her with a gift. Guests included Anna Lou, Anna Belle Rees, Mary Alice Rees, Joan Wight, Florence Irene King, Jean Knight, Virginia Ayler and Corrine Pierce. Miss Lois Bibler was the sponsor.

The marriage of Miss Helen Penland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Penland, and Patrick Benda, son of John Benda, was solemnized June 6 at St. John's Nep. Church at Pilsen with Msgr. John M. Sklenar reading the Wedding Mass.

Pvt. Albert Bernhardt was guest of honor at a family picnic Monday evening at the lake. Those present were Mrs. Henry Bernhardt, Alvin and Verda Mae of Tampa, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schick of Lost Springs, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Vogel and son, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Bernhardt, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Skibbe and son and Mr. and Mrs. Ora Kelsey and children.

Houses belonging to George Powell and Leslie Powell are being insulated this week.
