Another of Marion's finest sons, Pvt. Robert W. Haas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Haas, was reported killed in action on October 4, according to a telegram to his parents received this week from the War Department. He was 19 years old. The message stated that Pvt. Haas was killed on Palau, one of a group of islands recently taken from the Japs by units of the 81st Division.

Ella Marie Reinke celebrated her 17th birthday Tuesday evening, Oct. 31, with a slumber party, preceded by a line party to the midnight Halloween show at the Kaw Theatre. A snack was prepared and served by the girl after the show, the piece de resistance of which was a birthday cake, decorated by Ella Marie's brother, Bob. Breakfast in time to get to school closed the affair. Guests included Mary Helen King, Mary Lou Williams, Helen Hett, Lois Mathiot, Vivian Pierce, Dorene Stenzel and Pauline Keazer.

Miss Viola Thompson presented her younger pupils in a recital Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church with mothers as guests. Participating in the recital were Marlys Jean Rupp, Carmen Siebert, Milly Lou Matthews, Janet Holub, Pauline Minear, David Willis Wheeler, Lenore Wheeler, Paul Wesley Roberts, Jeanette Russell, Carol Jean Allen, Nancy Keazer, Carol Beth Miser, Barbara Mott, Carol Mott, Glenda Razor, Neva Stenzel, Betty Harder, Georgene Tajchman, Eilene Hansen, Diana Herbert, Margaret Dody, and Viola Dody.

Mrs. Bernal Johnson surprised her daughter, Darlene, of Herington, who spent the day at home, with a birthday party Monday evening. Those present were Jean Knight, Joan Wight, Peggy Gerstenkorn, Virginia Ayler, Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Van Buren, son Don, and grandson Larry.

An operetta "Cinderella Slipper" will be presented by the grades Nov. 9 at the high school auditorium. Cinderella is played by Mary Margaret Hannaford and the prince by Billy Wayne McKibben. The stepmother and her two daughters are played by Patricia McCarty, Bertha Ann Powell, and Diana Herbert. The fairy godmother is played by Sarabel Wolf.
