The sacrifice of two sons of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gonzales of Augusta, a fine Mexican family who made their home in Marion some years back, is told in a letter to Al Richardson dated March 11. Their son, Frank, was killed in the battle of St. Lo, France. Frank had received a battlefield commission and was killed just two weeks later. He receive a silver star for gallantry in action. Another son, Sgt. Sus Gonzales was wounded in Belgium January 29 and died the following day in a hospital. Sus had been overseas two years and talked of nothing but coming back to make up a little for the loss of Frank.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 15 sent the name of Randolph Carpenter to the United States Senate for confirmation as United States District Attorney for Kansas.

Junior Powell was honored with a dinner March 1 given by his mother, Mrs. Leslie Powell, celebrating his 13th birthday, which was February 29. Guests included Bob Reinke, Kerns Allen, Billy Carpenter, Buddy Hannaford, C.R. Moulton, Monty Frazier and Timmy Burkholder.

Mrs. W.H. Thornton suffered a painful accident last Friday morning. As she left her home to start to town, she stepped on the steel cover, which is a part of the sidewalk, over the storm sewer. The cover tipped, throwing her inside the opening. She suffered a badly bruised leg and general bruises.
