When that mass of cold Canadian air came breezing in to meet the Texas dry winds over the rooftops of Marion Tuesday evening the resulting thunderstorms took some freakish tolls from citizens around here. There damage at the Marion County Lake, near the Townsend Ranch at Peabody, at the D.H. Wenger property southeast of Marion, at the Bob Mathiot farm, also southeast of town, at the movie house in Florence, and at the Emory Hawbecker home in Marion.

The second polio victim of this area was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita last Friday. She is Peggy Hayward, 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Hayward on the north hill, Marion. Her physician, Dr. J.W. DeMand of Lincolnville, says she will have no complications in the limbs, but rather a mild case of paralysis in the back and neck.

The fish ponds at the waterworks are no more. Instead of bass, we'll now have baseball. Instead of perch, picnics. This area has been leveled out by bulldozer and will be smoothed by the city's grader.

Frank Hagans, Marion County Farm Agent for the past 16 years, has just been notified of his appointment as district supervisor for the Division of Extension work at Kansas State College, Manhattan. He takes over his new work July 22.

Cpl. Jean Dixon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Dixon, has been right in the midst of the "Great Feminine Swap" across the Atlantic. Jean's WAC duties have involved taking charge of groups of American Wives being shipped over to their army husbands in the occupation forces. The return trip sees the ship loaded with war brides being returned to their husbands in this country.

Members of the graduation class of 1944 of Marion High School, who are in or near town, enjoyed a watermelon feed Monday evening at the lake. Those there included Ada Frances Bell, Louise Conyers, Mildred Garrison, Vera Marie Matthew, Delores Ann Mott, Margaret Ruby, Luetta Soyez, Carolyn Hayen, Vera Belle Perry, Veona Wangerin, Dannie Grubb, Edwin Beu, Leslie Has, Robert Hagans, Bill Perry, Billy Ollenberger, Max Tharp and Buster Beisel.

The following new members of Sub Deb Club were initiated Tuesday evening: Anne Burkholder, Patsy Harris, Betty Williams, Marilyn Hayen and Rose Marie Avery. Prospective members Jerry Lou Johnson and Marion Hoel were out of town.
