A crew of 15 men, a system servicing gang from Chicago headquarters of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, Co., started installation Monday of an automatic light-automatic gate system which should be stoppage enough for U.S. Highway 50 traffic when an oncoming train whistles down the track. The crew expects to finish and have it in operation by the 15th or 16th of this month.

Two baseball stars from Marion were named to the all-star team at the McPherson tournament last weekend. They are Woody Steinert at left field and Arnold Schwemmer, catcher.

The city truck will go out again Friday morning to treat stagnant pools, marshes, culverts, etc. for mosquito control. Anyone knowing of locations not treated, report it to the City Clerk or County Health Department.

Several veterans have soloed at Marion Airport since June 18. John Perry was the first, but was followed closely by Edwin Beu, Bill Bryan, Francis Roberts and Jack Summervill. Edwin Beu was the first veteran to make a cross country trip.

A countywide farewell picnic will be held Friday evening in the Marion park honoring Frank Hagans, county agent, and his family who are moving to Manhattan. Carl Elling, new county agricultural agent, will also be there and it will be an opportunity for the public to meet him.

Janice Meisner, Roberta Newsom, Joyce Keazer and Vicki Barrett of the Presbyterian church left Wednesday for Camp Wentz in Ponca City where they will spend the week.

"Swede" Williams, carrying on his hobby of speedboat racing, took top honors in the Fourth of July races on Lake Afton, southwest of Wichita. With Swede at the helm, his Class C runabout clocked first over the finish line.

Plans for the reorganization of the grade school setup in the two Marion schools have been announced. Board chairman, James Meisner, states that tentative plans call for second, third, fifth grades in the valley; first, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth on the hill. If an additional teacher can be hired, kindergarten will be held in the morning at the valley school and in the afternoon at the hill school.
