The highest wheat yield reported in the county thus far came from 18 acres owned by Fred Batt lying west of the Rock Island tracks at the north edge of town. He harvested an average of 40 bushels per acre off the piece.

According to word received by his mother, Mrs. Anna Toews, Pvt. Winston Lee Toews of Hillsboro was killed in action June 14 on Mindanao Island in the Philippines.

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Collett are the parents of a son, Stephen Ray, born Sunday at the Marion Hospital.

The Sub Debs held initiation for four girls Monday night. The fun began at the home of Wanda Ireland and ended with a slumber party at the lake. Initiates were Jean Hagans Janice Socolofsky, Jackie Hawbecker, and Corrine Longhofer.

Loyette Hollar entertained with a party Friday night at the lake in honor of her friend, Betty Lou Gossen, who is leaving soon to live in Waco, Texas. The evening was spent boat riding and swimming followed by a watermelon feed. Those present were Georgia Christensen, Donna Christensen, Donna Powell, Dawna Summervill, Patsy Harris, Shirley Collett, Phyllis Larsen, Ann Burkholder. Betty Williams, Peggy McCarty, Cherridah Mullikin, the honored guest and the hostess.

The Rock Island Rocket through Marion was wrecked Monday afternoon while on a detour between Peabody and Wichita. It crashed into a freight train near Sedgwick and the engine and diner jumped the track and tore up about 100 feet of rail. Four trainmen were injured.
