Angels Among Us is theme for hospital auxiliary annual meeting

"Angels Among Us" was the theme of the 35th annual banquet meeting of St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary held Thursday evening at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion.

Decorations followed the angel theme, with white, gold, and red, and an assortment of decorative angels.

More than 70 people enjoyed a hamloaf dinner, prepared by the Eastmoor women, with Donna Kreutziger as chairman.

The Rev. Keith Allison provided piano music as guests arrived.

Judith Reno, president, welcomed guests and presided at the meeting. The invocation was led by Claudia Allison.

Hilary Dolbee, chief financial officer of St. Luke Hospital, spoke about changes, advances, and the optimistic, progressive outlook at the hospital.

Reno reported on the auxiliary Thrift Shoppe. It has been a busy place since its grand opening Dec. 30. New hours were announced, noon to 4 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

Auxiliary officers were installed by Lenore Dieter. They are Reno, president; Penny Marler, vice president; Joyce Smith, secretary; and Eileen Sieger, treasurer.

The president's written report included the projects and activities of 2005 in which the auxiliary initiated, worked on, or was involved with the hospital.

Those endeavors included urging the increase of hospital board of directors to seven members; the lobby renovation (including funds up to $8,000) and soliciting donations from other organizations; living center projects such as the monthly coffees; scholarships; the gift case; thank-you snacks for staff; and assistance to the county health fair and women's wellness workshop.

Fund-raisers included Old Settlers' Day pie sales and a high tea with a vintage wedding gown fashion show, plus substantial additional donations from other groups and an estate.

The featured speaker of the evening was St. Luke Hospital's newest "angel," Michael Jacobs. He is head of the physical therapy department.

Jacobs spoke about the many and varied services provided by the physical therapy department. His assistants are Mary Malory and Shawna Winter.

Jacobs has an extensive background including sports medicine, medical clinic, hospital, and private practice. He said he has served various doctors and health providers including those in alternative health care.

He has been at St. Luke Hospital since June and is impressed that such a small-town hospital can offer such advanced services.

Reno ended the meeting by reading the words to Alabama's recording of "Angels Among Us."
