Freedom isn t free : Lincolnville, Lost Springs post offices offer unique service

The sacrifices of the men and women in the military will be the focus of attention during the month of July at Lincolnville and Lost Springs post offices.

The U.S. Postal Service recently reissued the Purple Heart stamp in honor of combat-wounded veterans. In conjunction with that issuance, the Lincolnville and Lost Springs post offices are offering customers the opportunity to send U.S. service members a personal heart-felt "letter from home" using a unique commemorative card and envelope set.

The card features colorful artwork of an eagle flying in front of the U.S. flag. On the back of the card is room for a personal note of thanks and encouragement.

When the message is sent, a Purple Heart stamp and a special postmark with the words "Freedom Isn't Free" are applied to the translucent envelope.

The limited edition commemorative card and envelope set sells for $3.

"We only have 25 of the commemorative sets available at each post office, so we encourage our customers to come in as soon as possible," said Lincolnville postmaster Roger Krause.

"It's an opportunity to say thanks to those who are defending our freedom. These commemorative card and letter sets will be a forever keepsake for the service member receiving your personal message."

The envelopes may be addressed to known service members or "any" service member stationed at home or abroad.

The post offices have arranged for local veterans organizations to accept and distribute envelopes to unspecified service members.

The messages sent to known servicemen will be mailed July 28, the date on the special postmark.

More than 700 post offices in rural Nebraska, Kansas, and southwest Iowa are participating in the Letters From Home campaign.
