Accidents

The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:

At 6:25 p.m. Oct. 25, a 1999 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Eric R. Coleman, 29, Pratt, was traveling north on Sunflower Road when a deer came from a west ditch and struck the vehicle. The driver was unable to avoid hitting the deer. There were no injuries, reported Sergeant Jeff Soyez, and damages were more than $500.

At 8:30 a.m. Oct. 31, Shawn Curtis Britton, 17, 2466 Sunflower Road, Marion, was eastbound on 140th near Timber Road in a 1975 Chevrolet Luv pickup when the vehicle hit potholes in the road. The driver lost control and rolled the vehicle at least one time, reported Deputy Josh Whitwell. Britton was transported by ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion. The vehicle was registered to Kathy Holub of the home.

At 6 p.m. Nov. 4, Derek S. Fortine, 20, Goddard, was driving a 2003 Mazda 6 southbound on Indigo Road near 140th when a deer entered the roadway from the east ditch and struck the vehicle. There were no injuries, reported Deputy Whitwell, and damages were listed as more than $1,000.

At 10:45 p.m. Nov. 4, a 1994 Isuzu Trooper driven by Todd Allen Bevan, 37, Fort Worth, Texas, was eastbound on U.S.-50 near Sunflower Road when it struck a deer that was standing in the roadway. Elizabeth Smith, 27, Garland, Texas, was a passenger. Undersheriff Randal Brazil reported there were no injuries and damages were more than $1,000.

At 9:58 p.m. Nov. 5, a 1997 Mercury van driven by Bruce R. Rhodes, 46, 504 S. Third Street, Marion, was northbound on Sunflower near 150th when a deer came out of the west ditch. The driver was unable to avoid hitting the deer. Brenda A. Rhodes, 46, and Molly A. Rhodes, 19, both of the home, were passengers. Brenda Rhodes was injured and transported by ambulance to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, reported Sergeant Soyez.

At 5 p.m. Nov. 6, Jeffrey Ralph Ostmeyer, 26, 656 Timber Road, Peabody, was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup westbound on 60th near Quail Creek when a deer was struck after entering the roadway from a north ditch. Passengers in the vehicle were Amanda C. Ostmeyer, 26, Jordan Ostmeyer, 4, and Isabella Ostmeyer, 1, all of the home. Deputy Whitwell reports there were no injuries and damages were less than $1,000.

John L. Dicks, 46, 314 North Walnut, Marion, was westbound on 190th just east of Jade at 1:55 p.m. Nov. 3. An animal entered the roadway. Dicks swerved his 1996 Hyunda Elantra to miss the animal, entered the north ditch, and struck a steel post. Deputy Rollin Schmidt states Dicks was not injured.

Manuel O. Duran, 33, 1439 East 60th, Peabody, was traveling west on 60th just east of Limestone at 5:10 a.m. Nov. 9. A cow entered the road from the south ditch. Duran, driving a 1986 Chevrolet Z28, was unable to avoid hitting the cow which is property of Jeffrey D. Busenitz, 1331 East 60th, Peabody. Robert C. Hirsch, 58, 301 South Locust, Peabody, was a witness to the incident. Duran was not injured, reports Sergeant Soyez.

Keith B. LeValley, 47, Bentley, was westbound on 60th just east of Pawnee at 5:20 a.m. Nov. 8. A deer came out of the south ditch and was struck by LeValley's 1992 Chevrolet. The vehicle is registered to John D. Barker of Walton. Brenda J. LeValley, 59, of the home, was a passenger in the vehicle. Sergeant Soyez states there were no injuries.

William G. Gammon, 21, Jacksonville, Fla., was eastbound on U.S.-50 just east of Sunflower at 9:20 p.m. Oct. 16. When a deer came out of the east ditch. Gammon, driving a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, registered to Jennifer Gammon, of the home, was unable to avoid hitting the deer. Gammon was not injured, reports Sergeant Soyez.

Larry R. Kluttz, 50, Manhattan, was southbound on K-15 just south of 150th at 9:48 p.m. Nov. 11. A deer came from the east ditch and was struck by a 2004 Nissan Titan, registered to Flint Hills Optical Perspectives, Manhattan. Deb Kluttz, 48, Manhattan was a passenger in the vehicle. Undersheriff Brazil states there were no injuries.

A 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix owned by Ronald Funk, Hillsboro, was struck by an unknown vehicle 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9, in the 1100 block of East Main Street, Marion. No damage estimates were given by Marion Police Officer Howard Kahler.

At 7:15 a.m., Jerrod E. Christyauntie was driving a 1998 Mercury passenger car southbound on K-15 when a deer ran out in front of the vehicle. He swerved to avoid the deer which caused the vehicle to enter a ditch and stopped in a field.

The driver was transported by LifeTeam to Wesley Medical Center.
