Accidents

The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:

Barbara D. Koontz, 55, Newton, was eastbound on U.S.-56 just west of Remington at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 18. A deer entered the roadway from the north ditch. Koontz's 2006 Chevrolet Malibu struck the deer. Passengers in the vehicle were Betty Schmitberger, 51, Stephanie Thompson, 52, and Frankie Huxman, 56, all of Newton. Registered owner is Richard Koontz of the home. No one was injured, reports Deputy Josh Whitwell.

Nichole M. Gerhke, 20, 208 South Cedar, Hillsboro, was southbound on Quail Creek just south of 320th at 9:32 p.m. Jan. 15. Her 1999 Chevrolet pickup struck a deer that had entered the roadway from the east ditch. The vehicle is registered to Jonathan E. Walker of the home. Christopher Walker, 1, of the home was a passenger in the vehicle. Deputy Larry Starkey states there were no injuries.

Lacey A. Gilbert, 28, Wichita, was northbound on U.S.-56/77 just south of 250th at 2 p.m. Jan. 14. Gilbert lost control of the 1997 Mercury Sable she was driving and entered the east ditch. Leland Cox of Wichita is the registered owner of the vehicle. Kailie K. Gilbert, 6, and Lucas Gilbert, 4, both of the home, were passengers in the vehicle. No one was injured, reports Undersheriff Randal Brazil.

Mathew Paul Wilkerson, 19, Lebanon, Ore., was eastbound on 370th just west of Pawnee at 11 a.m. Jan. 10. The driver lost control of his 1998 Plymouth Voyager, slid side to side, and came to rest in the north ditch on its right side. Wilkerson was not injured, reports Sheriff Lee Becker.

Charles D. Unruh, 77, 966 70th, Peabody, was westbound on 70th just west of Indigo at 6:15 a.m. Jan. 15. Justin Belisle of Newton, had a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe parked illegally on 70th in the westbound lane. Unruh's 1996 tractor struck the vehicle. Unruh was not injured, reports Undersheriff Brazil.

Caleb B. Barkman, 17, 413 Briarwood, Hillsboro, was northbound on Indigo just south of 230th at 5:49 p.m. Jan. 11. The left front tire of his 1999 Ford Explorer blew out causing him to go into the west ditch. The vehicle is registered to Lynette Barkman of the home. Barkman was not injured, reports Deputy Whitwell.

Sometime prior to 4:42 p.m. Jan. 11, an unknown driver was making a left hand turn from Pine Tree Drive onto Lakeshore Drive at Marion County Lake. The vehicle went too far off the roadway and struck a bridge pillar, reports Deputy Whitwell.

Jesse C. Erickson, 68, 2756 Robin, Marion, was northbound on Remington just north of U.S.-56 at 6:10 p.m. Jan. 19. Several deer came from the east ditch. One deer was struck by Erickson's 1999 Buick Regal. Joyce B. Erickson, 66, of the home was a passenger in the vehicle. No one was injured, reports Deputy Starkey.

Jaclyn M. Dewey, 26, Ellinwood, was westbound on U.S.-56 just west of Limestone at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 8. Dewey's 1994 Honda Accord struck a deer in the road. Joel G. Dewey, 27, of the home was a passenger in the vehicle. The deer then was hit by Steven M. Selzer, 38, New Haven, Ind., who was eastbound on U.S.-56. Vickie L. Selzer, 39, of the home was a passenger in Selzer's 2004 Kenworth which is registered to Paccar Leasing Company, Indianapolis, Ind. Sergeant Jeff Soyez states no one was injured.

Hilary Sue Regalado, 18, 103 East 6th, Florence, was eastbound on U.S.-50 just west of Sunflower at 10:12 p.m. Jan. 7 when a cow came from the north into the roadway. Regalado, driving a 1997 Ford Aspire, was unable to avoid hitting the cow owned by Clay White of Red Rock, Ariz. The vehicle is registered to Eugene Regalado of the home. Sergeant Soyez states Regalado was not injured.

Robert R. Keller, 76, 316 Eisenhower, Hillsboro, was southbound on indigo just north of 90th at 6:45 p.m. Jan. 21. A deer came from the east ditch and was hit by Keller's 1999 Buick Park Avenue. Jean E. Keller, 74, of the home was a passenger in the vehicle. No injuries were reported, states Sergeant Soyez.

Vernolis F. Siebert, 85, 1667 190th, Marion, was northbound on Nighthawk just north of 140th at 6:40 p.m. Jan. 22. A deer came from the west ditch and was struck by Siebert's 2002 Ford Windstar. Rex. L. Siebert, 82, of the home, was a passenger in the vehicle. Sergeant Soyez states the Sieberts were not injured.
