Accidents

The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:

Tina L. Wesley, 19, McPherson, was westbound on U.S.-56 just east of K-15 at 9:45 p.m. April 6. A deer entered the roadway and was struck by Wesley's 1986 Chrysler LeBaron which is registered to Christopher Wesley, McPherson. Passengers in the vehicle were Hope Dechant, 20, Holcomb, and Mindy Munguya, 19, Wichita. Deputy Josh Whitwell states there were no injuries.

Joseph Willems, 63, 1577 Goldenrod, Hillsboro, was northbound on Goldenrod at 160th at 8:30 p.m. April 13. Willems, driving a 2000 Ford Expedition, attempted a right-hand turn onto 160th, but was traveling too fast. The vehicle went into the ditch. Willems was injured but did not require transport, states Deputy James Philpott.

William Ritter, 17, Whitewater, was northbound on Pawnee just north of 120th at 5 p.m. April 10, attempting to pull into a driveway. Jake P. Wynn, 17, 208 North Vine, Peabody, driving a 1997 Ford Mustang, struck the rear of Ritter's 1996 Ford Mustang. Ritter's vehicle is registered to Jane Ritter, Whitewater. Passengers in the Ritter vehicle were Tawny Wynn, 15, 208 North Vine, Peabody; Kendra Raskopf, 15, 305 Pine, Peabody; and James Mills, 17, Whitewater. Elizabeth Johnson, 17, 306 North Olive, Peabody was a passenger in Wynn's vehicle. Johnson was injured but did not require transport. A fence post, property of David Hett, 1212 North Pawnee, Peabody, was damaged in the incident, reports Deputy Whitwell.

Christopher D. Frantz, 39, 404 South Birch, Hillsboro, was southbound on Holly just south of U.S.-56 at 3 p.m. April 15. Cory N. Helmstead, 18, 612 South Cedar, Marion, was westbound at a field entrance. Helmstead, driving a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee, pulled in front of Frantz causing Frantz's, 1997 Plymouth Neon, to hit Helmstead and then enter the ditch. Helmstead's vehicle is registered to Heidi Jenkins, 212 South Birch, Hillsboro. Passengers in the Helmstead vehicle were Christopher Gibson, 18, 559 East 210th, Hillsboro, and Dennis Britton Jr., 19, Canton. Deputy Whitwell states there were no injuries.

Sherri R. Sells, 42, 1735 Bluestem, Marion, turned west onto U.S.-50 from Yarrow at 8:30 a.m. April 11. She noticed smoke coming from under the hood of her 2003 Dodge truck. After also seeing flames, she pulled to the side of the road. The fire extinguished itself. Deputy Philpott states Sells was not injured.

At 10 a.m. April 15 a hit and run accident occurred at Hillsboro Memorial Ballfield. Clark Carroll of Dwight reported someone had backed into his 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback while parked at the ball field. More than $1,000 in damages were reported by Hillsboro Police Sergeant Chad Funk.
