Accidents

The following accidents were reported to Marion County law enforcement agencies:

Brittany J. Dies, 16, Lehigh, was driving a 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on Upland Road near Gilham Road at 4:30 p.m. July 19, and had a problem with a tire. The driver lost control of the vehicle, entered an east ditch, and struck a fence. The vehicle was registered to Bradley Dies, of the same address. Melissa Lieders, 14, 313 S. Ash, Hillsboro, was a passenger. According to Marion Undersheriff Randal Brazil there were no injuries and more than $1,000 of damages to the car and fence.

Gerald Lee Hurt, 27, 105 W. Fourth, Florence, was eastbound on 140th, east of U.S.-77 at 4:30 a.m. June 26, when a deer came from a ditch. Hurt was driving a 1998 Chevrolet Prism and struck the deer. The deer then ran off. The accident was not reported until 10 a.m. that day, reported Sheriff Lee Becker.

Stephen C. Lewis, 60, Herington, was southbound on K-15 at 7:50 a.m. June 26, when a turkey flew in front of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala he was driving, and struck the hood and windshield. Elvira R. Lewis, 60, of the same address, was a passenger. Deputy Duane McCarty reported there were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damages.

Jackie L. Byrd, 62, 1551 Falcon, Hillsboro, was backing from a parking stall at Vogt's Hometown Market, 600 Western Heights, Hillsboro, when he told Hillsboro Police Officer David Funk that he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. The 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup, driven by Byrd, backed around to the north and struck a 2001 Ford Taurus that was parked in front of the building. The car was owned by Donald D. Rock, 2130 N. Kruse Dr., Marion. There were no injuries and more than $1,000 in damage.
