Address has changed Prairie View services the same

Staff reporter

If there is one point that Prairie View officials want to make, it is they are here to serve residents of Marion County.

"We are THE community mental health center for Marion County," Pam Burns, vice president of operations, said.

A recent relocation of office facilities from Marion to Hillsboro has not changed services.

The new facility is located in a temporary building at 805 Western Heights, Hillsboro's business park.

The agency is in the process of making long range plans that could include a permanent building.

The current building was moved in on the city-owned lots and is sufficient in meeting the needs of Prairie View clients.

Founded by Mennonite churches more than 50 years ago, Prairie View offers behavioral and mental health services for children, adolescents, adults, and elderly.

As the community mental health provider, the organization receives tax support from Marion County. Prairie View also provides similar services to residents of Harvey County and McPherson County.

The services

Clinical specialties include alcohol and drug treatment, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), cognitive disorders, community case management, development issues, depression, anxiety, divorce education, marital and family issues, older adult evaluations and treatment with a therapist visiting nursing homes, and stress management.

Child and adolescent case management is a service provided to children who are severely emotionally disturbed. Case managers help families find, coordinate, and maintain services that are needed to keep their children at home. They work with children and their families in individual and group settings.

The managers have regular contact with families and are available to meet with other people involved in the child's life.

Outpatient care is the more identifiable service Prairie View offers Marion County residents. A team of psychiatrists, clinical nurse specialists, psychologists, social workers, and nurses work together with community agencies and referral sources to develop individualized treatment plans for each patient.

"We continue to look at needs of the residents of Marion County to determine services," Burns said. "If there are any particular issues clients may have, we're willing to address them."

Workshops and group sessions also are offered.

Prairie View services are covered by most major medical insurance programs, Medicaid, and Medicare. Reduced fees are available to those who qualify and live in the area covered by the community mental health center.

Appointments may be made by calling (800) 362-0180 or (620) 947-3200.

Not all counties have this range of services, Burns said. "Marion County is very fortunate."
