Adolph Backhus

Adolph H. Backhus, 85, died June 28, 2005, at his home in Herington.

Born Dec. 21, 1919, near Tampa, he was the son of John and Helena (Ottensmeier) Backhus.

He graduated from Tampa High School in 1938, and was a sergeant during World War II in the Pacific theater of action.

He was a farmer and dairyman. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and held several church offices. He was a member of Clarey R. McClaren American Legion Post #12 in Herington.

On May 2, 1948, he married Mary Anna Lueker at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shady Brook.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Erwin; sister, Wilma Nunn; and his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Anna of Herington; two daughters, LaVerda "Verdie" Knaak of Leavenworth and Joan "Jody" Munson of Culver; six brothers, Emil Backhus of Herington, Herbert and Wilbert Backhus, both of Tampa, Edwin Backhus of Hillsboro, Harry Backhus of Leavenworth, and John Backhus of Enterprise; three sisters, Alma Meyer and Frieda Bentz of Tampa and Ella Heidemann of Decatur, Ill.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shady Brook, with the Rev. John Riebhoff officiating.

Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery with full military honors from Fort Riley.

Memorial funds have been established with the church or with Hospice of Dickinson County.
