Agreement close on building lease

Marion-Florence USD 408 board of education Monday passed a motion to go ahead with an extended one-year lease agreement with Marion County Special Education Cooperative for the special education building in Florence.

The agreement calls for the one-year lease to contain the same parameters as in the past. Although it wasn't said in the motion, there also will be an annual inspection of the building.

The board voted 4-2 in favor, with Roger Hannaford III and Rex Savage casting the dissenting votes.

The current lease runs out Sept. 1, and the new one would automatically extend the contract one more year.

Kathy Meierhoff, who is a representative of both boards, said the building condition is OK except for a few maintenance issues. There also is a problem with the building's heaters.

The building, which had been running with four, currently has just one working heater.

At last month's school board meeting, superintendent Lee Leiker said the building can run effectively with two.

The school board will present the option Monday to the special education board during its monthly meeting.
