Alice Hayes is part of Guatemala mission trip

Alice Hayes of rural Florence recently was part of a medical mission trip to Guatemala.

Thirty-two volunteers traveled to San Andres, Guatemala, to provide medical care and education to the largely Mayan community and the surrounding area.

The group included Alice's daughter, Dr. Kathryn Hayes, a graduate of Marion High School, and co-worker Laura Erb, both of Moundridge.

The group was coordinated through the Cure of Arts Catholic Church, Leawood.

Together with a group of six physicians, a nurse practitioner, and nurse educators, student physicians, and other volunteers, they held a clinic that attended 866 patients in four days. The group filled prescriptions and handed out vitamins valued at more than $20,000.

Alice worked in the pharmacy, helping fill prescriptions.

Volunteers held health and wellness clinics for more than 300 women and adolescents.

Other projects included the delivery of 30 birthing kits to midwives working in rural areas, as well as 14 lanterns given to the midwives for use in homes without electricity.

More than 600 items, including newborn blankets and clothing, were donated for distribution by midwives. In addition, 10 computers were donated for use in schools and clinics.

Donations still are being accepted for the Cure of Ars Guatemala Medical Mission's annual service project. Contact Alice Hayes, 620-878-4620 for more information.
