All bad things come to an end

I'm not one to rub things in. Plus I'm a firm believer of what comes around goes around. That's why I'm just sitting back and smiling about my Jayhawks' 31-28 victory over rival Kansas State.

But Jayhawk fans let me ask you one thing: Didn't that victory feel good?

Eleven years of getting beat down starts to wear on you. (I won't even get into Nebraska's 36 years of domination against KU. Although I didn't lose any sleep over their 70-10 loss to Texas Tech Saturday). Now back to the Wildcats' domination.

The last time K-State came to town while I was at KU, the Jayhawks lost 64-0. That was only because Bill Snyder held back in the second half. It could have been 100-0.

Now the losing streak is over. And a new one can't even start until 2007 because the unofficial sports rule book states a streak must constitute three games.

The only thing I regret is not being in Lawrence to witness the 10,000 crazies who stormed the field and tore down the goalposts.

All of that aside, there may be some solace for K-State fans in Marion. While Oct. 10, 1992, marks the last time KU defeated K-State before Saturday, Dec. 8, 1992, marks the last time Marion High School defeated Hillsboro in a basketball game.

That means it has been 12 seasons since MHS and KU have defeated their rivals. The Jayhawks have done their part, now it's the Warriors' turn.

Despite the fact Marion plays Hillsboro in January 2005, it's still a part of the 2004 season. If the similar 12 year streaks aren't persuasive enough, how about this bit of information: Last season the Jayhawks lost by 36 points to the Wildcats, while Marion lost by 32 to the Trojans.

OK so that's a stretch to try and link the two, but at least they were both in the 30s.

The fact remains that no streak lasts forever. KU will beat Nebraska one of these days; K-Sate will defeat KU in basketball (just not anytime soon); and Marion will beat Hillsboro.

It might not be this year, but at least the Warriors have the Jayhawks' streak-busting victory to think about.

If it doesn't happen this year, it will sometime. But what a year it would be for Marion and Kansas fans.
