Annual KVC fund-raiser nets $5,700 years ago
Near-perfect weather brought out motorcyclists Saturday, making the third annual KVC Motorcycle Ride for Kids a success by raising approximately $5,700.
Event organizer Rose Vinduska of Marion said generosity surpassed last year.
"We raised more money than last year," said Vinduska. "We can't say enough about the businesses and people who help support this."
The event began three years ago as an effort to raise funds for KVC Behavioral Health Care, a non-profit agency that provides services to those in foster care due to abuse, neglect, and abandonment.
Donated funds will provide items to children and families the agency serves.
Nearly 80 motorcyclists participated in a poker run and more than 100 people were in the park for a barbecue and prize drawings.
Poker run winners were: first place, Gene Winkler, $100; second, Pam Hett, a KVC quilt, made and donated by Custom Threads/Powder Keg; and third, Mike Gritten, a Harley-Davidson cooler with AM/FM radio, donated by Del's Electronics of Salina.
The top winners of the drawings were: $500 cash, Audrey McLinden; Kansas seal, copper artwork by Trace of Copper, valued at $400, Kevin Costello; 19" television with VCR/DVD player, Lester Kaiser; leather jacket, valued at $295, Jim Herzet; Kansas City Royals weekend getaway, valued at $250, Dianne Burnett; and leather fringed jacket, valued at $185, Jenny Christensen.
Other winners were LaDonna Sherbert, Renee Lincoln, Jennifer Montgomery, Ron Nitcher, Rosalie Holub, Terry Bentley, Terr McKinnon and Tammy Whiteside.
Vinduska said motorcyclists from around the state participated.
"We had people from Leavenworth, Mount Hope, Salina, people from all over," she said.
An event for next year already has been approved by KVC.
"We'd like to thank the Marion community for its support," Vinduska said, "and we look forward to the fourth annual rally."
