Area firefighters plan spectacular fireworks display Labor Day weekend

Marion County Firefighters Association will host a family fireworks extravaganza at dusk Sept. 2 at Marion County Lake.

The fireworks show will top off a long list of activities for the day, which will take place at the lake hall area on the west side of the lake.

Games for kids will begin at 2 p.m. and last until about 6 p.m. The firefighters will be helping and passing out prizes to the winners.

Old and new fire trucks will be on display and the Life Team helicopter will land at 4:30 (weather permitting) and be available for Marion County citizens — young and old alike — to look over.

A meal of pulled pork or hot dog with chips, baked beans, and drink will be available for a free will donation beginning at 5 p.m.

There will be a drawing for children with two spectacular prizes — a ride up front in the fire truck of his choice and being able to push the button to start the fireworks later in the evening.

At 8 p.m. the firefighters will draw for another prize — a fireman's blanket donated by Shelley Abbott-Becker.

Tickets for both the kids' drawing and the blanket will be for sale at the lake the day of the festivities. Cost for the tickets is $1 each or six for $5.

This is the fourth year Marion County Firefighters have hosted the Labor Day weekend event.

Funds raised will be used to develop a training park for all county firefighters. Marion County Commission has indicated a willingness to provide land for a training park if the county fire departments will purchase the equipment needed for training operations.

"The training park will be a huge boost for our fire departments," said Steve Rose, Peabody fireman and one of the organizers of the Labor Day fund-raiser. "The more experience and training our people have the better off they are when they go into a real firefighting situation."

People planning to attend the event should bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. The fireworks are visible from most publicly accessible areas at the lake.
