Bernhardt joins newspaper staff

Jessica Bernhardt of Marion, Southwestern College senior, has joined the Marion County Record staff as a summer intern.

Bernhardt will cover northern Marion County news, school and sport activities, write features, and design pages, among other duties.

She also will help with selling ads.

Bernhardt comes to the Record after two years as a staff member for The Collegian at Southwestern, as well as a news intern at the Winfield Daily Courier.

She is a 2006 graduate of Marion High School, and after completing her internship at the Marion County Record and attending two more semesters of classes, will have accumulated enough credits to graduate in May of 2009.

Since joining The Collegian staff, Bernhardt has held the positions of news editor, copy editor, and business manager.

This year she will be the web editor, copy editor, and business manager for the paper, as well as assistant editor of the school yearbook.

She also will work part-time in the admissions and communications offices at the college.

Bernhardt recently was the recipient of two awards from the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press.

Her work in series writing and single ad design earned her honorable mention awards.

"I've learned a lot from past work studies here [at the Record]," Bernhardt said, "and having an editorial position at a collegiate newspaper helped me."

Jessica plans on working at a professional newspaper full-time after graduation, although she is not sure where.

"I always knew I was going to go to college, and wanted to work at a newspaper since my junior year of high school," she said.

Bernhardt is the daughter of Dennis and Donna Bernhardt of Marion.
