Bernice Bartel

Bernice Hazel Bartel died peacefully, surrounded by family, Nov. 19, 2006 at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, Wash.

She was born May 27, 1922, to Harry and Marie (Stratman) Kizler at Hillsboro.

Bernice spent all of her growing up years in Hillsboro and graduated from Hillsboro High School where she was honored as valedictorian of her class. In 1943 she graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor of fine arts degree.

Bernice married her high school sweetheart, Roy Allen Bartel, Nov. 27, 1942, at her parents' home in Hillsboro.

Native Kansans, Roy and Bernice lived in Pittsburg, Lawrence, Coffeyville, Lindsborg, and Manhattan throughout Roy's career in secondary education during which time they raised three children.

Bernice was the librarian for the Physical Science Library at Kansas State University for 19 years, retiring in 1983.

She moved to Olympia, Wash., in October 2006, to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, Manhattan, for 43 years, serving her church in many different ways through those years.

She delighted in spending time with each one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The highlight of her retirement years was traveling with Roy in their Airstream all over the United States and Canada.

Bernice is survived by her son, Tom and his wife Jan of Arkansas City; her daughters, Beverly Lindholm and her husband Ken of Olympia, Wash., and Diana Dunne and her husband Mike of Liberty, Mo. She also is survived by five grandchildren, Gretchen Lindholm of La Center, Wash., Liese Hironaka (Wayne) of Sacramento, Calif., Derek (Lisa) Lindholm of University Place, Wash., John Dunne of Gainesville, Fla., and Sarah Dunne of Columbia, Mo.; and her great-grandchildren, Bethany Kate Hironaka and Oleg Roy Lindholm.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother Loren, and her sisters, Aldene Roark and Harriet Wiebe.
