Bernice Herbel

Bernice Herbel, 89, died July 24, 2004, at Marion Manor.

Born Feb. 27, 1915, in rural Marion County, she was the daughter of Clark and Martha (Schlotthauer) Johnston.

She attended Kreutziger, Pleasant View, Quarry, Florence, and Dobbs schools.

On Feb. 27, 1934, she married Alex Herbel. They lived on a farm in the Youngtown community from 1934 to 1954, except for a few years when they lived south of Marion. In 1954, the couple moved to Lincolnville.

Her life was filled with being a wife, mother, and homemaker. She enjoyed making noodles, gardening, sewing, and quilting. She took great pride in her children and grandchildren.

In 1994, she moved to Marion where she was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. She also enjoyed activities, meals, and functions at Marion Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Ruth Bessel, Edna Pauls, and Alice Rempel; and three brothers, Harold Johnston, Albert Johnston, and Lloyd Johnston.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Ronald and Ruth Herbel of Marion, Kenneth and Darlene Herbel of Salina, and Richard and Sharon Herbel of Solomon; a brother, Walt Johnston of Redfield; three sisters, Josephine Stroda and Elnora Siemens of Marion and Helen Reiswig of Sour Lake, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Marion with Pastor Troy Slater officiating.

Casket bearers were her grandsons, Brad Herbel, Darryl Herbel, Kurt Herbel, Scott Herbel, Steve Johnson, and Steve Cole.

Honorary casket bearers were grandsons Joe Klein, Mike Gaddie, and Rob King.

Burial was in Lincolnville Cemetery.
