Bernice Thies

Bernice Ann Thies, 95, of Russell, died Jan. 19, 2005.

Born Aug. 20, 1909, at Lehigh, she was the daughter of Franz and Maria Groening.

After teaching in a one-room school in Marion County for nine years, she married Clyde Thies. She helped her husband farm in Kansas and Missouri, and made pies and pastries in their restaurant in Wichita during World War II. She also helped manage Thies Food Center in Marion.

She was a member of Marion Christian Church for nearly 60 years, where she taught Sunday school, was a member of Christian Women's Fellowship, and sang in the choir.

She moved to Russell in July 2003.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1974, nine brothers, and six sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Thies of Russell and John Thies of Hillsboro; a daughter, Phyllis Bull of Broken Arrow, Okla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Zeiner Funeral Home.

Burial was in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial funds have been established with Marion Christian Church and Russell Regional Hospital.
