Bill Cordes to speak at Marion County schools
Bill Cordes, a motivational speaker and author who focuses on how teens can have a positive influence on society, will be in Marion County Monday.
He will be at Marion and Hillsboro school districts during the day, and at Marion High School gymnasium at 7 p.m. to spread his message about "getting students involved," according to his web site.
Marion County Communities in Schools director Linda Ogden, MHS counselor Phoebe Janzen, and seven MHS students saw Cordes talk this past summer, and Ogden thought it would be great for area residents to hear what he has to say.
"The kids really did like him," Ogden said. "[He] is really high energy."
Cordes uses humor, music, and an upbeat attitude to get his message across. The Kansas native has spoken in 48 states, four islands, and the District of Columbia. He has degrees from the University of Hawaii and Fort Hays Sate University.
While speaking across the country is his main focus now, he has worn many other hats during his life. He has been a school teacher, college professor, coach, and even a talk show host.
His sessions in the school will focus on how teens can use their energy and time positively.
YOGOWYPI
Cordes' favorite expressions is "YOGOWYPI", or "You Only Get Out What You Put In."
The message board on his web site is flooded with references to the "word," which is on his license plate, and helps young teens, and adults alike realize their full capabilities.
When he talks to parents, he mainly focuses on trying to teach them how to understand what the phrase really means.
"He really tries to build a connection," Ogden said.
His presentation will last two hours at the high schools, and one and one-half hours at the middle schools.
