Billy "Pat" Patterson years ago

Billy "Pat" Patterson, 78, of Marion, died Oct. 21, 2006, at his home. He was a retired iron worker.

Born Dec. 2, 1927, in Marion, he was the son of Harry O. and Rose Smith Patterson.

On May 15, 1948, he married Joyce Week in Carson City, Nev. She survives of the home.

The couple returned to Marion in 1989.

He was a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles with a degree in engineering. He served in World War II as a Merchant Marine.

Pat was a member of Valley United Methodist Church, Marion, and Marion Kiwanis Club.

He was preceded in death by a son, Martin Patterson, two brothers, Harry Newton and Albert Glenn, and a sister, Jessie Irene.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Patterson and Michal Olson, Martinez, Calif., four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Valley United Methodist Church, the Rev. Phil Smith, presiding. There will be no burial.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Roland Unruh

Roland J. Unruh, 83, died Oct. 23, 2006, of cancer at Bethesda Home, Goessel. He was a farmer and industrial mechanic.

Born Feb. 21, 1923, in Marion County, he was the son of Jacob H. and Lena Smith Unruh.

He graduated from Roxbury High School, joined the U.S. Army in 1943, and served in the South Pacific as a lineman. He was discharged in 1946. He returned to Kansas and helped his father farm.

On Jan. 1, 1949, he married Elva Dora Heidel of Marion. She survives of the home.

He was a member of the American Legion and VFW of Newton. He worked for Harley Sales and Lansdowne Equipment before moving to California. Upon his return to Kansas, the couple lived and worked on a farm near Walton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and three sisters.

Survivors include two sisters, Bertha Goentzel of Lehigh and Ellagene Bull of Covina, Calif.

Private family graveside services will be held with Peter Hartman, chaplain of Hospice Care of Kansas, officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Miller Funeral Home, Goessel.

Dave Bricker

Word recently was received by former Marion resident Madelyn Vogel of the death of her son, Dave Bricker. A funeral service was held in Denver. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 4 at Marion Christian Church.

Mildred Gibb

Mildred "Millie" Gibb, 90, of Elmdale, died Oct. 18, 2006, at Newman Regional Health, Emporia.

She was born Aug. 17, 1916, in Cedar Point, and was the daughter of Benton Scott and Hattie Mae (Vinson) Thompson.

She obtained her teaching certificate after high school and taught school for four or five years.

On July 3, 1945, she married Bill Gibb in Strong City. He died in 2000.

Millie worked in an airplane factory in Wichita during the war and as a nurse's aide at a nursing home in Cottonwood Falls. She was a member of Elmdale United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bill Thompson and Jake Thompson; and three sisters, Susie Robinson, Irene Link, and Bertha Fisher.

Survivors include three sons, John Scott Gibb, Elmdale, Dennis William "Pete" Gibb, Liberal, and Stanley Dale Gibb, Latham; daughter, Susan A. Bradford, Wichita; sister, Betty L. Thompson, Cedar Point; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life service was held Oct. 21, at Elmdale United Methodist Church, the Rev. John Hastings officiating. Burial followed in Elmdale Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
