Board approves cattle feed lot improvements

A commercial feed lot was approved Thursday by Marion County Planning Commission for Jeff Bina.

The lot will be located in the part of the southeast quarter of section 18, township 18 south, range four east, near the Bina residence at 1911 275th Road.

Bina said to meet Kansas Department of Health & Environment requirements cattle pens have to be moved 100 yards and a new lagoon system installed.

He currently has 750 head of cattle and 600 head of hogs. The hog operation is in compliance with KDHE regulations, Bina said.

David Brazil, county zoning administrator, reported Kansas Department of Health & Environment will issue a permit for 1,500 head of cattle and hogs when the requirements are met which include a county permit.

The commission discussed two types of livestock measurement — head and unit. The county's zoning regulations use a "per head" measurement regardless of the species (chickens, cattle, hogs, etc.).

KDHE uses a "per unit" measurement with two-and-one-half hogs equal to one animal unit. Cattle are measured by weight. Two head of cattle less than 700 pounds are equal to one animal unit. One head more than 700 pounds is equal to one animal unit.

Brazil recommended the county's permit match KDHE's permit so the applicant would not have to request another hearing to expand his herd.

The commission followed Brazil's recommendation and approved the 40-acre commercial feedlot to match the state's permit.

— The commission approved a lot split of 19.58 acres in part of the northeast quarter of section 12, township 21 south, and township three east.

Jerod Hett represented Ken Krehbiel who had applied for the split.

Hett said he had been a renter of the property at 1883 E. 120th Road and wanted to purchase the house, outbuildings, and surrounding land that totaled more than 19 acres.

Brazil said the applicant met the qualifications of the site plan review.

— Another lot split application was tabled until the next meeting because information was not received in time for the meeting.
