Book tells what goes on behind the scenes

Here I am, sitting in my sun room wearing my warmest robe, on June 25. Who opened the barn door? Brrrr! I just can't believe this weather. I like it cold at night, makes for good sleeping, but I'd like it a little warmer in the daytime. I'll regret that remark soon, I imagine.

I'm deep in a book, "Franklin & Winston," by Jon Meacham, published in 2003. What a book, so full of personal stories about those two great men during World War II. Not much about the actual war but about their relationship and conversations about how to run the war. It gives you an altogether different picture of what goes on behind the scenes.

Someone once said, "There is nothing worse than war." I have thought that too, haven't you? Churchill said, "Slavery is worse than war, dishonor is worse than war." He also said, "If the present criticizes the past there is not much hope for the future." Now you can mull that over in your mind. The author gives so many quotes from both Franklin and Winston, and letters too. It must take a lot of research to locate all that material.

Did you read in the paper about the fisherman who saw a huge ball bobbing up and down in the water? He investigated and found it to be a ball caught in a fish's mouth. He tried to extricate the ball but couldn't so sent his wife to get a knife. Then he cut the ball and let the air out, so the grateful and happy fish just swam on his way.

Isn't that a nice story?
