Bowling fund-raiser nets $5,500 years ago

More than $5,500 was raised and nearly 70 people participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marion County Bowl for Kids' Sake.

According to director Jackie Rice, 67 people participated in the event which was held Friday evening and Sunday afternoon at Sher Bowl Lanes at Marion, and Sunday at Trail Lanes Bowling at Hillsboro and Peabody Lanes at Peabody.

A total of 323 people gave pledges that totaled $5,700, a slight increase from last year.

"It was a successful event and everybody had a lot of fun," Rice said. "The bowling was a party to thank people for collecting pledges."

The funds will be used for general program support, with this event being the largest single fund-raiser for the year.

Currently the county program has provided six community-based matches and 105 school-based matches. The problem isn't finding children to participate but teens and adults.

"We're always looking for 'bigs' to participate in the program, particularly men," Rice said. Donations also are accepted year-round.

She continued that the fund-raiser would not have been as successful without sponsorship from businesses.

"If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't make as much," Rice said, which allows all of the money raised to be used for the programs.

The county agency was founded in 2000, and Rice said the bowling event probably has been going on since 2001 or so.
