Boy sustains injuries in ATV accident

A Marion Elementary School fourth-grader escaped life-threatening injuries Saturday when he was thrown from a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle, sustaining a fractured skull.

Cody Parmley, 10, of Cedar Point, was driving a four-wheeler on private property on 180th Road, east of Marion, when he lost control, went over a culvert, and hit a ditch.

Marion EMS responded to the incident with an air ambulance also dispatched because of the severity potential of the injury. The helicopter landed in an alfalfa field near the scene of the crash and he was transported by the helicopter to the trauma unit at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.

A CT scan was performed, mother Melissa Parmley said, which revealed there was no internal bleeding. The scans indicated Cody had fractured the frontal bone of his skull.

"The fracture is 29.3 millimeters wide and less than a centimeter compressed (or deep)," Melissa Parmley said. More than a centimeter in depth would have required surgery.

Cody received 13 stitches, had scratches and swelling on the right side of his face, scratches on his right shoulder and arm, and a scrape to his hip.

Restrictions include not lifting more than five pounds for the next two weeks, no physical education or recess activities for two months, and a follow-up examination and scan in six weeks.
