Breakfasts will announce results of Marion County Report Card

Communities in Schools, in partnership with Kansas Action for Children, will release county report card grades during a series of breakfast events in Marion County schools.

The breakfasts are open and free of charge, although registration is required. The public is encouraged to choose and attend one of the half-hour events at one of the following locations:

Peabody-Burns Junior-Senior High, Jan. 19; Marion Elementary School, Jan. 20; Hillsboro Elementary School, Jan. 21; or Goessel Elementary School, Jan. 21. All sessions begin at 7:30 a.m.

The 2004 Marion County Report Card follows the mid — December release of the Kansas Report Card where the state of Kansas received an overall grade of B.

Like the state report card, Marion County has received an overall grade as well as grades in five areas: safety and security, health, education, teen years, and child care. Grades are based on data characterized into 17 benchmarks, regarded as sound indicators of child health and well-being.

Data sources include the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), Kansas Department of Education, SRS, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and Southeast Kansas Education Service Center at Greenbush.

A press release from Gary Brunk, executive director of Kansas Action for Children, indicated the state is capable of "earning A's" and that we should "not be satisfied with under achievement."

All community members are encouraged to attend one or more of the events. A free breakfast, the report card, Kansas Action for Children 2005 calendars, and CIS Resources Directories will be available.

To register, contact Linda Ogden at ogdenlin@teen.k12.ks.us or call 620-947-3184. Those interested also may contact the local school directly to register.
