Building activity remains slower than previous years

The number of building permits issued in 2006 showed a slight increase over the previous year but a downward trend continues.

Marion building inspector Marty Fredrickson reported to Marion City Council Jan. 2 that during 2006, there were 31 electrical, plumbing, remodeling, new construction, signs, and conditional use permits issued by the city.

Of those, there were 10 new construction, five garages, three houses, and two commercial; seven electrical; six remodeling; five plumbing; two signs; and one conditional use permit.

In 2005 there were 29 permits, 37 in 2004, 37 in 2003, 69 in 2002, and 72 in 2001.

Fredrickson also reported there were two houses that did not meet current residential building codes and were condemned. Both houses have been removed and the lots cleaned up.
