Burdick celebrates 120th anniversary on Labor Day years ago

Thousands of people will flock to Burdick on Labor Day to celebrate the town's 120th anniversary.

"Memories Aplenty at 120" is the theme for the 2 p.m. parade. Those who wish to participate may contact Linda Peterson at 785-983-4353 or Jennifer Kassebaum at 785-983-4407.

A unique quilt auction will be held at 12 noon for a coverlet featuring Burdick Labor Day T-shirts from the past 35 celebrations. Proceeds will go to Relay for Life.

The day's activities will begin with a fun run/walk at 8 a.m., with registration at 7:30 a.m. Jim and Marilyn Peterson, 785-983-4844, are in charge.

An arts and crafts fair will begin at 9 a.m. at the shelter house. Nancy Riggin, 785-983-4493, is the contact person.

Kids games sponsored by Burdick Hustlers 4-H Club will take place from 10-11:30 a.m.

A Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter will be on hand for viewing from 11:30 p.m. until noon.

A moonwalk, three minutes for $1, and hoops game, 50 cents for 30 seconds, will be available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Musical entertainment from 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. will be provided by Tony Carl of Wilsey followed by Alex Stuchlik Polka Band.

Pedal power contest registration is at 1:30 p.m. at the tennis court, prior to the parade. The contest will begin after the parade, along with a model airplane show at the north field. A horseshoe contest and announcement of parade prize winners also will follow.

Food service

8:30 a.m. — Hebron Lutheran women sell coffee and homemade rolls and bread at the fire station.

9 a.m. — Burdick UMC women hold a bake sale at the fire station.

11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — BBQ lunch served by Centre FFA.

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; 3-5 p.m. — Funnel cakes at the fire station.

Homemade ice cream, sold at Hageberg's garage after the parade.

4-H concessions available all day.

Sunday activities

A community church service will be held at 9 a.m. Sept. 2 at the tennis court. It will feature a message by Pastor John Gerry and a community choir directed by Lynley Remy. Rolls and coffee will be served following the service. Bring lawn chairs.

At 7:30 p.m., the Tallgrass Express String Band will perform American grassroots music reflecting life on the tallgrass prairie. Lee Remy will be master of ceremonies. Homemade ice cream will be sold at Hageberg's garage following the program.

The two-day celebration is sponsored by the Burdick Council of Clubs and Corlberg-Smith American Legion post.
