Businesses sought for internship program

Leadership Marion County Class of 2006 has decided to implement a program to encourage county youth to stay or return after graduation from high school.

With a $1,000 grant from Kansas Health Foundation, The Apprentice — Marion County program will begin.

Letters have been sent to businesses in the county, requesting participation in a mentoring-type program for area sophomores and juniors.

Students from each of the five high schools in the county will be selected by local school counselors to represent their schools at a countywide event that will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 19, 2007, at Tabor College.

This event will be a competition to challenge the students' abilities to work together as a team. Eight students will be chosen to participate in internship programs with businesses within the county.

Each business in Marion County was notified about the program. Those interested are asked to respond and eight businesses will be selected by the leadership class.

The internship will be a minimum of 10 hours with the length determined by the business and student.

School counselors will assist in matching students with businesses.

For more information, contact a leadership class member. They are David Baker, Eric Driggers, Paula Flaming, Karen Larsen, Jill Meier, Jason Mohn, Jim Philpott, and Tracy Williams.
