Car Talk: Six easy tip

Good communication between repair shop and customer can help automotive work go smoothly, say the experts at the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. Their advice to car owners:

1. Be prepared to describe any problems. Try to note when the problem occurred and whether it is a constant problem or happens periodically, such as during braking, under acceleration, etc.

2. Carry a written list of the symptoms that you can give to a service consultant.

3. Do not suggest a specific course of repair. Let the technician diagnose and recommend a remedy.

4. Do not be embarrassed to request simple definitions of unfamiliar terms.

5. Don't push for an on-the-spot diagnosis. Ask to be called and apprised of the problem, course of action and costs before work begins.

6. Before you leave, be sure you understand policies regarding estimates, guarantees, and acceptable methods of payment.

ASE is a nonprofit organization founded to improve the quality of automotive service and repair through the voluntary testing and certification of automotive technicians. ASE-certified technicians wear the blue-and-white ASE insignia and carry credentials listing their certifications. Their employers often display the blue and white ASE sign.
