Carlsons' Grocery girls lose one, win one

The 12-and-under Carlsons' Grocery girls' team traveled May 28 to Hillsboro to play the Ampride team.

Hillsboro led the way with strong pitching by Dakota Kaufman. She struck out four girls for the evening, and gave up five walks.

The Marion girls hit the ball well, getting nine hits for the game. Alexis Cain led Marion with three doubles.

"Poor base running on our part contributed to the loss," said coach Russ Cain. Marion lost, 8-15.

The Marion girls played a better game June 1 when they traveled to Peabody, defeating them 19-15.

"The girls learned from earlier base running mistakes and hit the ball well," Cain said.

Chassidy Carlson and Shelby Percell surprised Peabody with a couple of bunts. The girls were patient at the plate, drawing 18 walks and only one strikeout.

Alexis Cain pitched the third and fourth innings, striking out five and allowing five runs.

Rachel Thurston made a great play at second base on a hard-hit ball to help close the final inning.
