Cat in the Hat" visits MES lunchroom years ago

A lunch time visit Wednesday from the Cat in the Hat was the high point of Read Across America Week at Marion Elementary School.

Marion-Florence USD 408 superintendent Lee Leiker dressed the part of the Cat in the Hat as he read the book of the same name written by noted children's author Dr. Seuss, otherwise known as Theodore Geisel.

While Leiker read, the students were able to read along silently to a Powerpoint presentation projected on the wall of the lunchroom, prepared by Sarah Waddell, MES library aide.

At the same time, students dined on green eggs and ham in honor of the Dr. Seuss book. They also enjoyed birthday cake in honor of Seuss' birthday.

Other activities also were planned in honor of Read Across America Week, according to MES Title I instructor Shari Padgham.

Also on Wednesday, students participated in DEAR or "Drop Everything and Read."

Each student received another free book as part of the RIF (Reading is Fundamental) book distribution. Students received a free book also during the first semester.

Other optional class activities were held throughout the school, including additional Dr. Seuss events, reading activities, author studies, favorite book explanations, reading with buddies from other grades, and guest readers.

Students also had the opportunity to enjoy Read Across America Week by dressing up to five various themes. Monday was crazy socks day. Tuesday was wear sweats day. Wednesday was Dr. Seuss Day. Thursday was dress up day and Friday was wear sports attire day.
