Catholic theater company to perform June 23 years ago

The Theophany Catholic Theatre Company of Washington, D.C. will perform a three-act play titled, "The Jeweler's Shop," at 7:30 p.m. June 23 in Marion City Auditorium. Free will donations will be accepted.

Ramie Bina, daughter of Raymond and Denice Bina of Marion, is part of the 10-member cast along with her fiancé, Jake Samour.

"The Jeweler's Shop" is a play written by the late Pope John Paul II while a priest in Poland in the 1960s. It's subtitle explains the subject matter: "A Meditation on the Sacrament of Matrimony, Passing on Occasion into a Drama."

The focal theme of the play is that the conquest of ego and fear are essential to the two becoming one. The rings from the jeweler's shop provide the symbolism.

Each of the three acts presents a separate marriage relationship with distinct issues and circumstances.

Although not a modern, action-packed drama, the play has universal meaning and is intended to provide insight into human behavior.

The theatre company seeks "the rediscovery and affirmation of the truth, goodness, and beauty of masculinity and femininity which have been so obscured," said producer Christina Strafaci.

The play will be performed at World Youth Day in August in Cologne, Germany.
