The girls' and boys' basketball teams at Centre High School were defeated in the second round of the 1A regional tournament at Goessel, failing to advance to sub-state.

It was the end of a season in which both teams struggled, posting more losses than wins.

After losing to White City Thursday, 60-45, the Cougars finished with a record of 8-14. Goessel claimed the championship Saturday by defeating White City, 58-28.

The Cougars led after the first quarter, 10-9, but were outscored 23-13 in the second quarter to trail 32-23 at halftime.

They held their own in the third but weren't able to make up for the lost points. A 14-8 scoring advantage for the Huskies in the final quarter resulted in a 15-point loss.

Trevor Troutt led the Cougars, scoring 13 points and providing nine rebounds. Zach Slayden scored 11 points, nine of those from three-point range. Bryant Brunner contributed five assists.

Girls' results

The Lady Cougars were defeated Friday by top-seed Hope, 61-20. Hope came into the tournament with a record of 17-2 and went on to win the tournament by defeating White City, 42-35.

The girls' performance Friday was lackluster. Their hearts didn't appear to be in the game. They had a difficult time keeping the ball and putting it through the net.

By the end of the first quarter, they trailed 10-4. By halftime, the deficit had grown to 23 points, 32-11.

The malaise continued in the second half, as the Lady Cougars scored a total of nine points compared to 28 by Hope.

None of the girls scored in double digits. Burhoop and Carlye Simons each scored five points, followed by Allison Shields with four.

Centre girls ended the season with a record of 7-15. Coach Kelly Steiner chalked it up to the team's youth and inexperience. He said Kylie Burhoop was the only team member coming into the season with a lot of varsity experience.

With that in mind, the next season should be better.
