In a special meeting Thursday, Centre USD #397 board of education considered several bids on a science department remodeling project at the high school.

They accepted a bid of $247,500 from Emporia Construction and also approved a 5 percent contingency fee of $12,375.

The bid includes new exterior windows, an accordion partition for the new science room, and all casework including lab tables, instructor tables, and a fume hood.

Other bidders were Markowitz Builders of Emporia and Cheney Construction of Manhattan.

The project is expected to be completed by Aug. 11, and lab equipment installed by Sept. 11.

According to architect Mike Carson, there is a one-year warranty on quality of construction.

In other action, the board accepted the resignation of Burdette "Bud" Peterson as teacher and athletic director.

In his letter of resignation, he wrote: "At this time in my life, I would like to face another challenge in my teaching career," but he gave no details as to his future plans.

Peterson has been a school teacher for more than 25 years.

The board concluded the special meeting with an executive session to discuss negotiations on new certified staff contracts. Clerk Peggy Falen and Superintendent Bob Kiblinger were included in the session.
