The Centre Cougars suffered their first league loss of the season Jan. 11 at Wakefield, 49-36. Their record was 4-l heading into the first round of the league tournament Tuesday at Hope.

The two teams were neck-and-neck in the first quarter, and Centre led 11-10. The Cougars scored just six points in the second quarter to fall behind by four points, 21-17 at halftime.

Scoring was almost even in the third quarter, keeping Centre within striking range. However, the Bombers scored 20 points in the fourth quarter compared to 12 by Centre to surge ahead by 13 points and clinch the victory.

Dustin Burnett's two three-point goals in the fourth quarter kept the loss from being even more lopsided. He was high-point man with 12 points, followed by Justin Garrard with nine.

Seth Jirak was held to a first-quarter three-point shot and one free throw.

The team shot 32.5 percent from the field and completed four of 14 three-point attempts. They had a total of 20 rebounds, 17 turnovers, and 16 fouls. Not a good night.

The junior varsity was defeated, 61-45. They were done-in by an extremely poor second quarter, in which they were outscored 19-3. They trailed 27-14 at halftime.

Both teams scored 15 points in the third quarter, and Wakefield outscored Centre 19-16 in the fourth quarter.

Lance Diepenbrock had an excellent second half, scoring 17 of the 18 points to lead the team. No one else scored in double digits.
