Centre Cougars lose to Solomon and Hope

The Centre High School boys' varsity added two more losses to their record this past week. They were defeated by Solomon, 68-53, and Hope, 72-57.

The Cougars got off to a good start at Solomon, leading 18-11 at the end of the first quarter on two three-pointers by Seth Jirak and good shooting by Kevin Mueller.

Solomon outscored Centre 22-14 in the second quarter to gain a one-point lead by halftime.

Solomon continued to outscore Centre in the final two quarters, resulting in a 15-point loss for the Cougars.

Jirak and Dustin Burnett scored 13 points each, and Mueller had 10.

Bryant Gutsch provided five assists, and Burnett grabbed eight rebounds. Alfonse Klenda had two blocked shots.

The junior varsity was defeated, 62-33. Zach Slayden led Centre's scoring with 11 points.

Centre vs. Hope

In the game against Hope on the road Friday, the Cougars got behind early after a three-pointer by Burnett put Centre up, 3-2.

Hope scored the next 12 points. By the end of the quarter, Centre was down by eight, 12-20.

The Cougars fought back to within three points at one point during the second quarter on good shooting by Burnett and Gutsch.

After a last-second three-point shot by Jirak as the horn sounded, the Cougars ended the half with a seven-point deficit.

During the second half, Hope led by as much as 16 points when Gutsch made a three-pointer and Mueller added two, to close the gap to 12 points.

The Cougars scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, but Hope scored 19, handing Centre a 15-point loss.

The biggest problem for the Cougars occurred at the free-throw line. They went to the line 15 times but scored only four points. On the other hand, Hope went to the line just five times and also scored four points.

Centre outdid Hope 5-4 in three-point completions, but Hope scored 28 two-point goals compared to 19 by Centre.

Burnett was high-point man for Centre with 19 points, followed by Gutsch with 14.

Tad Remy provided six assists and grabbed five rebounds.

The junior varsity game proved to be extremely competitive.

The two teams were almost evenly matched in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Centre outscored Hope 18-9, but in the third quarter, Hope outscored Centre 20-9.

The two teams tied at 55-all at the end of regulation play, to put the game into overtime. Hope then scored six points on three baskets. Centre scored four points at the free-throw line to lose by two points, 61-59.

Four Centre players scored in double digits: James Weber, 15, Ben Krause, 13, and Bryant Browner and Zach Slayden, 12 each.

Parents' Night is Friday. Centre will play Lebo.
