The Centre High School Cougars defeated Hamilton 66-36 Monday at home in the first round of the 1A regional tournament.

The Cougars, with a record of 7-12, were seeded third. Hamilton has been winless all season with a record of 0-15.

Centre will play White City at 6 p.m. Thursday at Goessel.

In the week leading up to regionals, the Cougars won a makeup game Feb. 10 at Solomon and lost Feb. 11 to Wakefield at home and Friday to Chase County at Strong City.

The game at Solomon reportedly was an exciting contest which Centre eventually won, 69-65. It was to be their final win of the regular season.

Solomon led 34-32 at halftime, but a solid 26-17 third quarter scoring advantage by the Cougars led to a four-point win despite being outscored 14-11 in the final quarter.

Trevor Troutt scored 16 points and had 13 rebounds to lead the Cougars at the hoop. He was followed by Ben Krause with 15 points, Bryant Brunner 14, and Brian Burhoop 12.

Centre vs. Wakefield

The Cougars took on league-leader Wakefield Tuesday in the final home game of the season.

Three seniors — Bryant Brunner, Zach Slayden, and Michael Kaiser — and their parents were recognized. The late Lance Selznick and his parents also were mentioned.

Troutt was on fire the first quarter, contributing nine points. Freshman Burhoop nailed a three at the end of the quarter, giving Centre a 25-16 lead.

The Bombers became more aggressive in the second quarter, and at 3:15 they tied the game, 37-37. They led at halftime, 43-40.

It didn't take long in the second half for Wakefield to surge ahead. The Cougars turned the ball over again and again as the Bombers scored again and again.

By the time the horn sounded at the end of the fourth quarter, Wakefield led by 22 points, giving the Cougars a resounding defeat.

Troutt piled up 21 points, followed by Brunner with 16 and Slayden with 11.

Centre vs. Chase County

Centre played Chase County Friday at Strong City and was defeated, 53-50.

The game was close all the way, but the Bulldogs managed to retain the edge. After three quarters of play, they led 40-35.

The Cougars outscored the Bulldogs 15-13 in the fourth quarter, but returned home with a three-point loss.

Brunner led scoring with 13 points, followed by Slayden with 11. Troutt had 11 rebounds.
