Centre FFA members receive recognition at banquet

The 2007 Centre FFA banquet was held May 8 in the high school gymnasium.

Alumnus Jackie Klenda, state treasurer, gave the address. The 2005 graduate was active in the FFA chapter, serving in officer positions at the chapter and district level and earning chapter, district, and state awards.

This year's chapter awards included creed speaking, Dallas Spooner, top fruit salesman, Ryan Richmond, star greenhand, Alex Hajek, and star in agricultural placement, Alfonse Klenda.

Scholarships

Scholarship awards (GPA of 3.5 or above) were presented to seniors Gloria Belton, Savannah Forsberg, and Kevin Mueller; juniors Kylie Burhoop, Brooke Carlson, Nellie Hill, Kristine Jirak, and Julie Rziha; sophomore Adam Kristek; and freshman Shelby Deines.

Gloria Belton was awarded a $500 Earl Wineinger scholarship and a $500 Leo S. Jirak Memorial scholarship. Kevin Mueller received a $200 Evancho Memorial scholarship.

Leadership scholarships were awarded to Savannah Forsberg, $300, Jo Terwilliger, $300, and Gloria Belton, $400.

The Centre FFA Alumni Association presented $150 scholarships to Gloria Belton, Jessica Deines, and Kevin Mueller.

Chapter proficiency awards

Gloria Belton — ag communications and ag education.

Ryan Richmond — ag mechanics design and fabrication, wildlife management.

Konley Harding — ag processing; small animal production and care, specialty animal production.

Allie Will — beef production.

Kevin Mueller — dairy production. He also won district and state proficiency awards.

Andy Carlson — diversified crop production, grain production, home and/or community development. He also won district and state proficiency awards in the latter.

Alfonse Klenda — diversified livestock, poultry production, swine production placement. Also district award in diversified livestock.

Jo Terwilliger — equine science.

Brandy Kaiser — floriculture.

Kristine Jirak — food science and technology, swine production entrepreneurship, fruit and vegetable production.

James Weber — forage production.

Nellie Hill — ag sales and service.

Samantha Seifert — landscape management.

Heath Hill — turf grass management.

Nathan Barney — sheep production.

New officers elected for the 2007-08 school year are: Kristine Jirak, president; Nellie Hill, vice president; Julie Rziha, secretary; Nathan Barney, treasurer; Andy Carlson, sentinel; Dallas Spooner, student council representative; and Shelby Deines, reporter.
