The Centre High School volleyball team started out on a high note Saturday at the Herington Invitational by defeating arch-rival Hope.

They lost the first game, 19-25, but won the next two, 25-12 and 25-17 to win the match.

Selena Seifert served for 13 points including four aces. Jackie Klenda delivered 15-of-18 spikes and four kills. Kylie Burhoop had 10-of-11 spikes and three kills. Alyssa Luna was 9-of-12 with six kills and one block.

Alisha Barney and Megan Gutsch each blocked the ball three times.

The other two matches didn't go as well. The Lady Cougars lost to Sacred Heart in two games of 16-25 and to Chase County in two games, 17-25 and 21-25.

Coach Yvonne Burhoop said the team played well.

"We didn't have a lot of unforced errors in the first two matches," she said. "When you have unforced errors, you're giving points away.

"Sacred Heart is tremendous. Even though we didn't win, we did well including excellent blocking. Our coverage was there but Sacred Heart capitalized on our mistakes."

She said Chase County had good, hard servers and the team worked aggressively to respond. She said one time three players were down on the floor digging for the ball.

She is optimistic about upcoming contests.

"The girls are still receptive and that's a plus," she said. "They work hard in practice. If we all keep coming together and are consistent, it will pay off."

Parents' Night is Tuesday with a triangular at CHS. Junior varsity action begins at 4:30 p.m.

The girls fell behind early in the second game and were not able to catch up.
