Centre girls dominate Solomon

Centre girls' varsity team improved its league record to 10-4 by defeating Solomon Feb. 8, 61-29. The game was played at Solomon.

Megan Gutsch scored three baskets and two free throws in the first quarter as Centre jumped to an early 15-4 lead.

The outcome never was in doubt as the Lady Cougars outscored Solomon 14-10, 13-6, and 19-9 in the final three quarters.

Statistics reveal Centre's aggressive play. Centre stole the ball 33 times compared to five by Solomon. In field goal attempts, the girls completed 23 of 68 compared to 12 of 40 by Solomon. The Lady Cougars went to the free-throw line 23 times, adding 14 points, and Solomon was the at the line seven times, completing four.

At least 10 players contributed to the 32-point win. Gutsch led with 20 points, 12 rebounds, four steals and five assists. Jackie Klenda had 10 points, five rebounds, four steals, and five assists.

Alyssa Luna rebounded the ball seven times, and Jenna Beneke five. Selena Seifert stole the ball eight times and provided three assists.

After games this week against White City and Chase County, the team begins regional tournament play Monday on their home court.

The junior varsity defeated Solomon, 30-21, on a strong fourth quarter. The two teams were tied, 6-6, at the end of the first quarter, and the half ended with Centre up by one, 12-11.

Both teams scored four points in the third quarter, but Centre ended the game strong with 14 points in the fourth compared to six by Solomon to win the game by nine points.

Kylie Burhoop led scoring with nine points. Alisha Barney added six and Chelsey Tajchman five.
