Couch Yvonne Burhoop got her first look at her new volleyball team in action Aug. 28 when they competed in a quadrangular at Elyria.

Centre defeated league-member Elyria but lost to higher-class Canton-Galva and Inman, ending the day with a record of 1-2.

Burhoop said she was concerned about the girls' ability to pass the ball and thought it might be a long day. But she was pleasantly surprised, especially by the play of some of the underclassmen.

"The kids moved a lot better than I thought they would," she said.

She noted that sophomore Dallas Rosenow played well most of the time. Carlye Simons, another sophomore, in the center front position, looked good and had a couple of blocks despite her lack of height, Burhoop said.

The girls defeated Elyria in two games, 25-17 and 25-13.

Senior Kylie Burhoop led the team, serving for seven points, delivering six aces, and completing six of 11 spike attempts. She also provided three kills.

Josie Peterson accumulated five points and two aces in the second game. Samantha Alvarez set the ball a perfect 12-of-12, two for a kill.

In the second match, the Lady Cougars gave Canton-Galva a run for their money, losing by four points, 21-25, in the first game and three points, 22-25, in the second.

Alvarez and Burhoop each served for four points to lead scoring. Dallas Rosenow provided two aces.

Amy Hajek set a perfect 18-of-18, two for a kill. Burhoop led at the front line, spiking the ball in 12-of-17 attempts, followed by Leann Pankratz with 8-of-14.

The final match against Inman was the toughest. Centre was defeated in two games with identical scores of 17-25.

The Lady Cougars had a difficult time scoring. Alvarez and Peterson were highest servers with three points each. Burhoop and Pankratz once again led the charge at the net.

Playing against time, the junior varsity traded wins with Canton-Galva, losing the first game, 21-25, and winning the second, 20-15.

Tori Schill served for a total of seven points, followed by Carlye Simons with six. Peterson aced the ball three times.

They defeated Inman in the first game, 25-17, and lost the second, 8-25. D.J. Turner served for eight points, followed by Schill with seven and one ace.

Burhoop said there were lulls in the action, when the girls didn't pass well, giving the opposition the advantage. But she noted the team is young and will improve.

"We need to be consistent," she said, "but we had a better showing than it looked like we would in practice."

Centre High School will host an invitational tournament Saturday. A schedule is published elsewhere.
